Ingredients

1 cup pearl barley

4 cups water or vegetable broth

1/2 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)

1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (optional)

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

Fresh fruits (like berries, bananas, or apples) for topping

Nuts or seeds (like walnuts, almonds, or chia seeds) for garnish

A pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

Rinse the barley under cold water to remove any impurities.

In a large saucepan, combine the rinsed barley, water (or broth), and salt. Bring to a boil over high heat.

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 30-40 minutes until the barley is tender and the liquid is mostly absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Stir in the milk, honey (or maple syrup), cinnamon, and nutmeg if using. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, mixing well until creamy.

Remove from heat and let it sit for a couple of minutes.

Serve warm in bowls and add your choice of fresh fruits and nuts or seeds on top for extra nutrition and texture.
