Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter, divided

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of American cheese (or Swiss cheese, if preferred)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: pickle slices for garnish

Instructions

Cook the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Prepare the Patties: In a bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape into burger patties that match the size of your bread.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook the burger patties for about 3-4 minutes on one side. Flip and top each patty with a slice of cheese. Continue cooking for another 3-4 minutes until the cheese melts and the patty is cooked to your desired doneness.

Assemble the Patty Melt: On a clean surface, place two slices of rye bread. Add a burger patty with melted cheese on top of each. Layer on the caramelized onions. Top with the other slices of rye bread.

Grill the Sandwich: Wipe the skillet clean and return it to medium heat. Place the assembled patties in the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese is melted. You may need to press down slightly for an even toast.

Serve: Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately. For an extra touch, add pickle slices on the side.
