Ingredients

2 large apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk mixed with a splash of vinegar)

1 large egg

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 tsp ground cinnamon (plus extra for dusting)

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

Vegetable oil (for frying)

Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Apples: Core the apples and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rings. You can leave the skin on or remove it based on preference.

Make the Batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, combine the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract, then mix until smooth.

Combine: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix; it's okay if there are a few lumps.

Heat the Oil: In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Fry the Rings: Dip each apple ring into the batter, allowing the excess to drip off. Carefully place the rings in the hot oil, frying a few at a time without crowding the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.

Drain: Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried rings and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Finish with Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, combine extra granulated sugar with a dusting of cinnamon. While the apple rings are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until well coated.

Serve: Arrange the fried cinnamon apple rings on a serving platter. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar for an extra touch and serve warm with a side of vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce if desired.
