Garlic knots have a fascinating history rooted in Italian-American cuisine. Originally, they emerged as a way to use leftover pizza dough, transforming what could have been waste into a delicious and beloved snack. These knots are typically made by tying strips of dough into knots and then baking them until golden brown. Once out of the oven, they are generously brushed with a mixture of garlic, olive oil, and often a sprinkle of parsley, making them not just a side dish but a culinary experience unto themselves.

Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant yeast

1 tsp sugar

1 ½ tsp salt

1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)

¼ cup olive oil (plus extra for brushing)

6 cloves garlic, minced

¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

½ tsp dried oregano

½ tsp dried parsley

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

    - In a large bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.

      - Gradually add the warm water and olive oil to the dry ingredients, mixing until a sticky dough forms.

        - Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

          First Rise:

            - Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

              Shape the Knots:

                - Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 10 equal pieces.

                  - Roll each piece into a long rope (about 10 inches) and tie it into a knot, tucking the ends underneath. Place the knots on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

                    Second Rise:

                      - Cover the knots with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.

                        Preheat Oven:

                          - Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

                            Prepare Garlic Butter:

                              - In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, oregano, and parsley. Mix well.

                                Bake the Knots:

                                  - Brush the knots with half of the garlic butter mixture and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

                                    Finalize the Knots:

                                      - Remove from the oven and immediately brush the remaining garlic butter mixture on top while they are still hot. If desired, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh parsley.

                                        Serve Warm:

                                          - Allow the garlic knots to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm as an appetizer, side dish, or snack!
